How to Organize Your Creative Projects Without Losing Inspiration

How to Organize Your Creative Projects Without Losing Inspiration

When we were kids, we were easily distracted by the newest technology or the newest toy. We were all infected with something called shiny toy syndrome.

The thing about shiny things is that they don’t always stay that way and the thing that drew us in – the shininess- will fade. When that happens it can be hard for us to finish what we started once the ‘shininess’ is gone.

With business, that doesn’t change but what needs to be different is that the job needs to be finished. As a virtual assistant, I find it harder to finish my own business tasks because after a while of repeating it, it’s not ‘shiny’ anymore or novel.

But when I’m doing my clients work, it’s always shiny, because it’s always something new!

So then the question is, how can we stay focused and organized to get the tasks done and complete our projects?

We make it shiny and fun!

The next question is how do we do that?

I’m glad you asked!

The answer is this, we turn our work into a game.

As a neurodivergent woman in business, it can be daunting to try and keep up with neurotypical people who are steamrolling their goals. It’s easy to feel left behind or like you’re missing out when everyone else around you seems to be crushing it. But that’s only because you have to create a system that works to keep you engaged!

What’s one thing that can keep you engaged consistently?

Let’s bring it back to childhood.

Games!

As kids we are constantly wanting to play that video game or that card game or that board game for just one more round, one more turn, one more quest.

Why is that?

Because there are goals and quests that have to be checked off, and with that you can see your progression!

I think you’re catching on by now, but I’ll spell it out anyway, the easiest way to make our work feel like a game is to break it all down into smaller manageable tasks that you can use to get to a milestone.

A milestone or a goal can be a significant spot on your journey to the completion of your project.

Okay so let’s break down how we got to where we are.

We were kids once.

Kids love games.

Life can lose its ‘shiny’ effect.

Breaking down work goals into manageable tasks makes it feel like a game.

And once again.

We were kids once and kids love games.

Great so now we’re all on the same page.

The next step is actually getting the project broken into steps. Identifying each task withing the project that is going to propel you into the next part!

This is where the fun comes in.

Step 1. Have a project.

Step 2. Identify sections of the project (ex. Beginning, middle, end).

Step 3. Outline the goal of each section.

Step 4. Use that goal to decide what tasks will get you to the goal.

Step 5. Write those tasks down somewhere for you to check off and feel accomplished!

Step 6. Celebrate!

Whether it’s writing the email or curating an entire marketing campaign. All big projects should be broken down into steps that are more manageable to deal with one at a time.

And my favourite part is the celebration, whether it’s a snack, or a drink, or just a break. Having something that makes you happy or feel better will encourage your brain to keep going! And do it all over again 🙂

And there you have it.

p.s. I may or may not have written this on the subway while I was on my way to grab a treat myself 😋 because this was one of my tasks to complete!

Enjoy your game!
